Biblical Turkey
At his second missionary journey,(49-52 AD)he visited Tarsus,Derbe and Lystra.Paul and his companions,Silas and Timothy had plans to joruney to southwest of Anatolia but a night before they set out,Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia begging him to go to Macedonia to help them.
According to Acts,Paul began his third missionary journey (52-56 AD) by travelling all around the region of Galatia and Phyrgia ; Derbe,Lystra,Iconium and Psidian Antioch. Then he traveled to Ephesus, an important centre of early Christianity and stayed there for almost three years.During his stay in Ephesus,Paul wrote four letters to the church in Corinth. On his way back to Jerussalem Paul and his companions visited other cities such as ; Troas,Miletus,Phillipi,Rhodos and Tyre.
St. John the Apostle also called St. John the Evengelist or St. John the Divine one of the twelve apostle of Jesus and traditionally believed to be the author of three letters of John, the Fourth Gospel and possibly Revelation in the New Testament.
According to the Fourth Gospel, also known as Gospel of John (19:26-27),on the cross ; When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved,he said to his mother,’Woman, behold, your son’.Then he said to the disciple,’Behold your mother’.And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.
The disciple whom he loved is thought to have been St. John. The tradition holds that taking Virgin Mary with him,St John travelled to Ephesus in Anatolia, was exiled to the island of Patmos, wrote the Fourth Gospel and the book of Revelation thereand finally returned to Ephesus where he died and was buried.
His basilica and burial place is located 1 mile away from Ephesus ancient city.
